Nav1.7isavoltage-gatedsodiumionchannelthatinhumansisencodedbytheSCN9Agene.Itisusuallyexpressedathighlevelsintwotypesofneurons,thenociceptiveneuronsatdorsalrootganglionandtrigeminalganglion,andsympatheticganglionneurons,whicharepartoftheautonomic(involuntary)nervoussystem.Nav1.7ispresentattheendingsofpain-sensingnerves,thenociceptors,closetotheregionwheretheimpulseisinitiated.TheNav1.7channelproducesarapidlyactivatingandinactivatingcurrentwhichissensitivetotheleveloftetrodotoxin.KnockoutmicethatlackNav1.7innociceptorsshowedreducedresponsetoinflammatorypain.
